Caitlin Rose

Caitlin Rose

After a 9 year gap, Nashville-based songwriter Caitlin Rose returned in 2022 with her third full-length record Cazimi – and it is a work of art. Rose’s album features some timeless songs like Modern Dancing, Nobody’s Sweetheart, Getting It Right (featuring Courtney Marie Andrews) and Carried Away. In the summer of 2023, I rented De Vermaning – a 17th century church in Edam, The Netherlands and – backed by English indie rock band Hollow Hand – Caitlin Rose recorded covers of Magnolia Electric Co.’s Nashville Moon and Randy Newman’s Marie and her own Carried Away.

Does it matter that every star fell from the sky?

Magnolia Electric Co.’s Nashville Moon, helmed by Jason Molina, exemplifies the power of storytelling through music, a characteristic of the band’s discography. The song’s thematic core revolves around longing, loss, and the perpetual quest for meaning.

I’ve been on that road and it was darkness end to end
And I just headed for the dark again
How far am I from living my whole life
Only in the dark
I’d say friend
You know that depends on how close you are

On the deluxe edition of her album Cazimi, Caitlin Rose offers a fresh interpretation of Magnolia Electric Co.’s Nashville Moon. Her rendition brings a new dimension to the song, blending her distinctive vocal style with the poignant lyrics originally penned by Jason Molina. Rose’s cover maintains the introspective essence of the track while infusing it with her unique blend of contemporary and classic country influences. The arrangement on Cazimi adds a layer of warmth and subtlety, making the song distinctly her own.

You’re the song that the trees sing when the wind blows.

Marie is a song by American singer-songwriter Randy Newman, featured on his 1974 album Good Old Boys. Known for his sharp wit and often satirical lyrics, Newman takes a different approach in Marie, offering a tender and introspective ballad. Caitlin Rose’s cover, solo on acoustic guitar, in the middle of that old church building which due to the heat wave turned into a oven hours before, both of us determined to get it right, added another layer to the song for me, as I’m sure it will for you.

You’re the song that the trees sing when the wind blows
You’re a flower, you’re a river, you’re a rainbow

Two songwriters and a fiddle player walk into a room… and record a brilliant session for The Influences. That’s – simply put – what happened eleven months ago at TivoliVredenburg in Utrecht, where JP Harris, John R. Miller and Chloe Edmonstone recorded a session together; playing covers of Blaze Foley and Michael Hurley and an…

Had I taken the time to list my favourite records of 2023, Hollow Hand’s Your Own Adventure would be pretty high on it. There’s something about the Brighton based folk-rock group’s sound that is simply intoxicating to me. The amount of plays it’s gotten over here at the house are countless and there’s no end…
