The Influences
The Influences is an ongoing music video project that captures intimate live performances and explores the formative influences of some of the most compelling artists from around the globe.
Created and curated by Dutch journalist and filmmaker Matthijs van der Ven, The Influences (originally known as Onder Invloed in its early days) began in 2008 as a way to document the music that shaped musicians’ identities and careers.
The project uniquely blends interview-style storytelling with stripped-down, authentic performances, giving audiences a glimpse of both an artist’s personal journey and musical craft.
There is no better way to discover music than watching great musicians cover the songs they love.
The Influences puts a singular focus on capturing artists’ honest interpretations of the songs and musicians that have had a profound impact on their work. The name, The Influences, reflects its core theme: an exploration of the heritage of music and how it weaves its way into new and modern artistic expressions. The project’s hallmark lies in its emphasis on intimacy and authenticity.
Over the years, The Influences has featured over 400 artists, including both rising talents and well-established acts. Among the contributors are artists like The Tallest Man On Earth, Damien Jurado, Courtney Marie Andrews, Anaïs Mitchell, Molly Tuttle, The Staves, John Paul White, Daryll-Ann, and Villagers, all of whom offered captivating covers of their musical influences and original songs, often recorded in minimalist and unconventional settings—from empty theaters, castles and hotel rooms to open fields and quiet musea.
Van der Ven’s first book Onder Invloed – featuring profiles on seventeen Dutch musicians – was published in January 2012 by publisher L.J. Veen. He also co-produced two albums Traditionals I and Traditionals II, that feature modern recordings of traditional songs by a selection of (mostly) Dutch musicians.
Over its evolution, The Influences has gained a devoted international following, cementing its reputation as a treasure trove for music lovers and an archive for musical history. Its understated elegance and devotion to storytelling through performance continue to resonate with audiences and inspire a deeper appreciation of artistry in music.
As it stands today, The Influences continues to offer a meaningful platform where songs and stories collide, offering an enduring reflection of the meaning of influence and its role in the creative process.
