The Deep Dark Woods & Erin Rae

The Deep Dark Woods & Erin Rae

When certain artists I admire are coming through my area, there’s no way I’m missing the chance to film them if I can make time. We had planned to shoot Ryan Boldt of The Deep Dark Woods and Erin Rae in the not-so-deep or dark woods nearby, but a sudden downpour changed our plans. Fortunately, the petting zoo at the end of my street welcomed us in, where I captured their beautiful rendition of the traditional song The Banks Of The Lough Erne.

The Banks Of The Lough Erne is a take on a traditional Irish song of emigration that has many names, Rambling Irishman, Lough Erne, New York Bay, and An Irishman From Monaghan amongst many others. I first heard it by the beautiful Irish singer Dolores Keane and her group De Danann,” says Ryan Boldt.

Erin Rae adds: “I’d been a big fan of The Deep Dark Woods for several years so when Ryan reached out to me about singing on this song for his Broadside Ballads project, I was really excited. So thankful to be touring here with them and singing more.”

The Deep Dark Woods and Erin Rae are still on tour, go see them.

Thank you for watching and enjoying this session. You’ll probably like some other sessions from The Influences’ archive too, like these earlier ones we filmed.

‘The first time I really listened to Bob Dylan changed my life.’ The Canadian folk band The Deep Dark Woods produces some of the loveliest modern folk songs I’ve heard in some time. Frontman Ryan Boldt recorded two traditional songs and his own Drifting On A Summer’s Night’.

I’ve been filming sessions for this website for twelve years. In all those years, there isn’t a singer I’ve heard more peers express their admiration off than Erin Rae. The Nashville based songwriter’s work is loved by many musicians I’ve filmed, and for years now, I’ve joined them. From 2015’s Soon Enough to 2018’s masterpiece Putting On…

It was January 29th 2015, when I first met American songwriter Andrew Combs. I was in the upstairs room in Paradiso Amsterdam and Justin Townes Earle had just finished his sound check, when all of a sudden, I heard this special voice over the PA. It was Combs, getting ready for his support slot that…
