Last week I told someone to simply listen to everything that came out on the Austin-based record label Keeled Scales. She would like everything she could find, I promised. I mean Buck Meek, Twain, Katy Kirby; what's not to like? And Sun June is another one of their gems: their fresh and captivating sound has made many of my bike journeys more enjoyable this year. When we met up in Rotterdam's Comedy Club Haug, they recorded covers of Little Dragon, Porches and Wilco.

'Twice'

'We love the sonics and the subtle structure changes. We go back to this song a lot because we’ve never fully understood the speaker or what the song is about—each phrase has its own power.'

'Weird in the best way.'

'Porches' Country is perfect. It’s simple and strange and makes us feel weird in the best way.'

I Am Trying To Break Your Heart.

'Wilco has been a big influence on all of us, especially this song. We love the simple structure and the mix of direct language with nonsense.'

On Tour.

Sun June are about to hit the road supporting Fruit Bats, Lucy Dacus and Liza Anne in the US. No new Europe dates are known right now, but let's hope we'll be able to host them at our shows in Utrecht one day. Now that would be a treat.

Though I’ve tried a few times, there’s an intangible magic to the work of Sun June that makes it incredibly difficult to capture in words. Like a drifting sense of longing found buried in the heat of summer, Laura Colwell’s voice has the ability to not only glow but linger; a fleeting memory half-remembered, a dream you can’t pinpoint, always slightly out-of-step with the world.
