Sometimes things are too special not to film. As you might remember; In 2025, The Influences launched a special project Solo, by other people. A musical tribute to Michiel Flamman. In response to his serious illness, the idea arose to support him through music. Friends and admiring artists covered songs by Solo, as a tribute to his work and influence. One of the covers was Spinvis’ translation of Everything Goes. A month ago, Flamman and Simon Gitsels played a concert at the Stadsklooster in Utrecht – and no-one knows if there will be a next. So, when they asked me to film, I came running. And to top it off, they incorporated a part of Spinvis’ version in their own – with Spinvis’ Erik de Jong and Lucas Oldeman (and a lot of other contributors) attending. I could not think of a better and more fitting way to conclude Solo, by other people than this video of Everything Goes, by Solo.
Covering the cover
Here’s what Michiel Flamman had to say about Spinvis’ rendition last year: “The fact that Spinvis, The Netherlands’ greatest troubadour of the 21st century, has now translated and performed a Solo song is an incredibly moving compliment. Together with his keyboardist Lucas Oldeman, they deliver a glowing version of Everything Goes, one that even we, as Solo, couldn’t improve upon.”

Listen to NEW MEN
Sometimes life catches up with music and with Solo’s NEW MEN this appears to be the case. Solo is a Dutch pop duo, made up by Michiel Flamman and Simon Gitsels and this is their fourth record. Like Songs ’n Sounds, Solopeople and Before We Part, NEW MEN is an album to listen to breathlessly.
Even after a 15 year gap, the unique collaboration of Flamman and Gitsels is still fruitful. In fact, exactly as it felt in the period between 2004 and 2008 when Solo made three sensitive pop records and established a name for itself.

The making of ‘Unterwelten’
A little over five years ago, I decided it might be interesting to start filming Michiel Flamman, a Dutch musician then operating under the name Solo. He had recorded three albums full of melodic, beautiful songs, but I had the feeling he didn’t really know what was going to happen next.
